Many people know motivation as the driving force behind an action.
Here we are discussing internal motivation – what it is which makes you want to do something.
Your definition of Motivation is the way you interact with the world, in fact your whole reason for doing anything is determined by what motivates you.
It is why you do something.
Your own definition of motivation seems natural to yourself. For you, it is simply the commonsense way of doing things.
Understanding what motivates you and how, helps to keep yourself on track when planning ahead.
One of those questions you need to ask yourself when deciding if something is worth doing or not is “does it fit my motivation type?”
The road to success is littered with unfulfilled plans and projects which did not come to fruition simply because they didn’t fit within a persons natural motivation.
The goal may have been worthy, but the motivation was wrong, and if the motivation is wrong you will lose interest.
Many procrastinators are such not because they are lazy, but because they are doing things, or planning to do things, for the wrong reason. And the wrong reason is simply that it does not fit their natural definition of motivation type.
To someone of a different motivation type, why you are doing something may not make any sense at all, and conversely when observing someone of a different motivation type, you may well ask “what made them do that?”, or even “why on earth would they want to do that?”
Apart from self understanding, recognizing someone else definition of motivation helps you appreciate how and why they operate – very important in relationships.
There are three broad categories into which define our definition of motivation, and thus in general, the type of person we are. This in turn determines the way in which we act/react to the world around us, and what we tend to attract to ourselves.
The three motivation categories
- Social Recognition.
You have some of each type in your makeup. One of these types will of course be the dominant motivating factor in your life, however, from time to time you may embrace each of the three types.
